Healthcare
The environment:
Hospitals are key players in the challenging orchestration of a broad network of healthcare providers, including first, second and third line healthcare, primary physicians, paramedics, homecare providers, etc. Hospitals in themselves are very complex organisational structures consisting of principle actors such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, administrative and logistic personnel, and last but not least patients. Their interaction is crucial to the good functioning of the hospital.
Failure to reach equilibrium, will lead to deficit operations, inadequate care for patients, high operational costs and idle time on infrastructure, a lot of waiting time for staff and patients, unsatisfactory working conditions and safety risks.
Healthcare provision is also facing a number of formerly unknown challenges in a continuously changing environment:
- Increasing cost-pressures due to an ageing population
- An upsurge in chronic diseases and increasingly expensive therapies
- The need to improve cross-organisational cooperation in health care processes
- Organisational changes and challenges due to outsourcing
- Fulfilling agreed internal and external service levels in healthcare services
- Increasingly demanding patients and consumerism against relatively lowering budgets per treatment
- Shortages and limitations on nursing personnel and physicians
- Increasing complexity in orchestrating all entities and persons involved in the healthcare process
Clear understanding of responsibilities and interfaces is necessary to gain insight in the dynamics of the processes and is the starting point to align healthcare processes optimally to patient and material flows.
